Chinese Crested

You are welcome to print this flyer (back to back works well) to utilize for identification purposes in shelters or rescue efforts.

The Chinese Crested is most commonly known as a hairless dog, but there is a fully coated version, called a Powder Puff which is commonly mistaken for a Poodle or Terrier cross when it comes into a shelter. A full face Powder Puff will resemble Benji.

The breed standard for these dogs is very specific but in reality, shelter dogs can range from 5 to 25 pounds. They will likely be matted as their hair is usually straight, soft and silky. Less often, you may find a stiffer hair or curly coat. Coloring ranges from any solid color to spotted and can be white, silver, slate, brown, blue, gray, black, rust, cream and others. Erect ears are more common in the hairless variety but can occur in the Powder Puff as well. Below is a shaved down Powder Puff with drop ears.

There are also two body types, deer and cobby. The deer style are taller and have long straighter legs. The cobby may have bowed legs in the front, are shorter than they are long, and are more heavily muscled. Chinese Cresteds commonly have what are called hare feet with fairly long nails.

Below are pictures of a variety of Powder Puffs with a show quality example on the left. Groomed, they are likely to have a shaved muzzle to varying degrees.
